Goofy Mug Shot

When I was a little boy, I was fascinated by people who could draw, sculpt, paint, or throw clay.

I decided very early that I would become one of those people.

As you can see, the results aren't all that impressive. Another dream dashed.

Scribbling

Here are five of my favorite pencil sketches. The graphics on this page are just thumbnails; click on the thumbnail to see the full sketch. These sketches were all done with #2 pencil and charcoal on buff drawing paper. They were scanned from the originals at 256 levels of gray.

Vandalizing Wood

Here are two photos of the only wood carving from my 20's that seemed worth keeping. The other pieces either ended up as bookends (long lost now) or as gifts to friends. I call this one "The Woody Philosopher." Woody was carved with three whittling knives from a single block of wood a friend brought back from Africa. I have no idea what kind of wood it is (other than beautiful and very very hard to whittle).

Woody was supposed to be all one piece, but during his creation, his nose and part of one lip came off (the wood broke). I glued them back on and only very close inspection lets you see the joins. I polished him with steel wool, sandpaper, and emory. The shine comes from soaking the final result in vegetable oil—he has no varnish.
